Queries Regarding CBSE Re-Exam

Students who apply for the compartment, usually grapple with some tricky questions. Here are some queries that students usually have in their minds while filling the compartment form, and solutions to them.

Feel free to ask your queries in the comment box.

Queries of class 12th students

Question :- I failed in 2 subjects in class 12th, am I eligible to apply for compartment exam? I had 6 subjects in class XII.

— As per CBSE rules, a candidate has to pass at least 5 of the 6 subjects. Since you had 6 subjects, therefore, it is obvious that there was one optional subject i.e subject like physical education. Now, if you have failed in 2 subjects, then one of the failed subjects will be replaced by the optional subject.

This means that you are now fail in only 1 subject, therefore, you are eligible to apply for the compartment exam.

Question :- I did not get it, you mean to say that I can only give compartment exam for 1 subject?

— Yes, since all the compartment or supplementary exams are conducted on the same day, or we can say that it is a one-day event, therefore, one can give the re-exam  for only one subject.

Question :- What if I fail in 2 of the main subjects like Maths and Physics, and I want to improve my marks in both the subjects?

— In that case, you will have to repeat class 12th. As per the cbse laws, a student can only give the compartment exam for only one subject in a year.

Note :- If you want then you can apply separately for that particular subject after clearing 12th (you will need to do some research).

Question :- So, does it mean that I can give the compartment exam for the other subject next year?

— No, you can not. The result of the compartment is declared few weeks after the exam is conducted, and you will get an updated marksheet.

Question :- Ok! at least I can fill the improvement form for that subject.

Nope! as per CBSE laws, one can fill improvement form for all the subject, but not for the subjects in which s/he was failed in class 12th. The only way to improve your marks in both the subject is repeating class XII again.

Question :- What if I fail in compartment exam? or, how many chances will I get to clear the compartment exam?

— A candidate gets three chances to clear a compartment exam. First chance in the month of July (the same year when s/he failed), second chance in the month of March/April (When the regular exams are held) the next year, third and the last chance in the month of July next year.

If you failed in 2016, then 1st chance will be in July 2016, second chance in March/April 2017, and third chance in July 2017.

Question :- What if I fail in all the 3 attempts of re-exam?

— That will be too bad as you will be considered fail, and then you will have to repeat class 12th again. And this way you will waste 3 years in 12th.

Question :-  If I fail in 1 main subject, but pass in all the other subject including the optional subject, then can I fill the compartment form for the main subject in which I am fail?

— Yes, though you will be considered passed (as you are pass in 5 subjects), but if you want, then you can appear for the compartment exam of the main subject.

Question :- What about practical marks? Will I have to give the practical exam again if I have got compartment in one of the subject having practical, like chemistry, physics etc?

— It depends, if you failed in practical, then you will have to give the practical exam again. But if you are passed, then the same marks will be carried to the compartment result.

Queries of Class 10th Students

Question :- I have got compartment in class 10th. Can I get admission in class 11th before my compartment result is out?

Yes, you can get admission. But, if you fail to clear the compartment exam/improvement of performance (IOP) in the first attempt, then your admission will be cancelled.

Question :- In how many subject can one get compartment in class X?

A student can appear for compartment exams in all the subjects if needed.

So, these are the main queries that students struggle with while applying for the compartment. Hope these questions have cleared your doubts, but if you still have something to ask, then please feel free to ask by commenting. We will try to come up with the most accurate answer.

Make your preparations according the Blueprint, which will help you a lot.
