The National Eligibility Test (NET) is no longer compulsory to secure a job in colleges and universities as an assistant professor. The examination procedure adopted previously for this faced a lot of criticism from academic sectors which did not consent to it. But now with the help of the HRD Ministry the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday amended its regulation on faculty recruitment and relaxed the minimum eligibility conditions for appointment of assistant professors.

HRD minister, Smriti Irani announced on Tuesday that scholars who completed a PhD or registered for one before 2009 would be eligible for lectureship without clearing the NET. This would efficiently create a larger talent pool of teachers which would go hand in hand with the current demand of teaching faculty in the country. But there are certain conditions like candidate’s PhD degree should be awarded in regular mode and the research thesis should have been evaluated by at least two external examiners. Also, the candidate should have appeared for viva-voce and have published at least two papers based on the PhD thesis in research journals.

The new rules have also allocated space for uplifting female research scholars and differently-abled researcher. They would now be able to complete their PhD taking a longer time of eight years rather than six years along with getting three years instead of two to complete M.Phil degrees. Women candidates will also be provided maternity, child care leave for up to 240 days once in the entire duration of their M.Phil or Ph.D degrees. These essential changes have sure brought a feeling of relief among the candidates.
